Help Kids Beat Summer Boredom

We are less than a full week into our summer vacation from school and we’ve already heard “I’m bored!” so many times. It never ceases to amaze me how bored kids can get when they don’t want to use their imaginations. Our kids are bad for this. They don’t tend to want to think outside the box, or get creative. They’d rather sit and complain about being bored!

Yesterday, we heard I’m bored no less than ten times from various children. Our kids would love to play in the pool all day if we’d let them but what they don’t get is that we have to sit outside and supervise them and it’s hot. We are going through a vicious heatwave right now and it’s not even fun for us to sit and watch the kids in the pool. You stand outside for 5 minutes and you are already sweating. We’ve been trying to get the kids to stay inside, watch movies and get creative but they’ve needed quite a few nudges here and there. Here’s what we’ve given them to try to get creative and beat their summer boredom!

Help Kids Beat Summer Boredom

OUTSIDE:

  • Water Balloons
  • Water Guns
  • Sidewalk Chalk
  • Bubbles
  • Skipping Ropes
  • Bonoculars
  • Bug Nets
  • Water Toys

INSIDE:

  • Board Games
  • Puzzles
  • Movies (in moderation)
  • Craft Supplies: Felt, Markers, Glue, Ribbons, Pipe Cleaners
  • Cards
  • Colour by number books
  • Crossword puzzles
  • Books

We’ve also been encouraging fun play such as hide and go seek, manhunt etc. Our kids could have so much fun if they put their minds to it! We have to keep encouraging them though, and although it gets tiring this is what happens come summertime. When we were kids we’d be outside until the street lights came on, we’d be playing at each others house sand running around until we couldn’t run anymore. Nowadays, it’s all about electronics and plunking in front of a television screen – not something I want my kids doing for the whole summer. Everything in moderation is key!

What do you think can help with kids boredom this summer?
